Author and Seattle Times environment reporter Lynda Mapes talks about her new book Witness Tree and her year studying a single, 100-year-old oak tree at the Harvard Forest. The tree shows us what birders, gardeners, hikers and other outdoor people know: the seasons aren’t what they used to be as spring on average is earlier, fall is later and winter is squeezed on both ends. A look deep inside trees and how they work, and examination of how changing seasonal timing and global warming are altering forest ecosystems and even the function of individual leaves.

Lynda is the environment reporter at the Seattle Times. She wrote Witness Tree (Bloomsbury, 2017) while a Bullard Fellow in Forest Research at the Harvard Forest and a Knight Fellow in Science Journalism at MIT. She lives in Seattle. This is her fifth book. For more information including reviews, radio and TV stories about the book, podcasts, and magazine stories about Witness Tree, go online to lyndavmapes.com
